TOM MARKS
 Presidents Corner

First off you could not miss that this edition of the, “President’s Column”, is authored by the vice president. Ray had to step down “due to circumstances that have changed in his life”. Ray will begin teaching at St. Bonaventure University and must direct his energy towards this venture and his family. Ray did so with a heavy heart, however he hopes the club will continue with the programs we have started. Ray will continue as a member and will remain as active as possible. He will still continue Project Healing Waters as long as he can.

I know I can count on our current membership, directors and officers for their support while I finish Ray’s term as president. I believe that Ray has built the club on a good foundation, and as Ray has said many times a club is not one person but a community, we will continue. As your new president I will continue our programs and I hope we can build upon our successes. If we are to succeed we need to grow our membership and retain current members.

The club voted to make some structure changes to our General Membership meeting that will make two positions critical to our success in the future. We have restructured our meeting; we will not be discussing business at the general membership meetings. These meetings will be social events were we can get together to hear good speakers, talk about fly fishing, tie flies, and meet new members and cultivate friendships. Therefore, I believe our program director is vitally important to the club. He arranges for guest speakers and coordinates activities at all general membership meetings. These meetings are how members and potential members judge and see the club. An interesting meeting will bring members back and encourage more people to join. This makes it very important that we have a good program for the General Membership meetings. I believe a strong membership chairman is very important to our club his activities keeps our membership growing by reaching out to our community to recruit new members. I know one person can not do everything so I hope as we move forward members will step up to help both of these directors. Highlighting these two director positions I do not mean to diminish the value or importance of the other directors, everyone is important.

A term is only one year that is not very long; I sincerely hope that if you take on a position you can remain active for the term. I know circumstances can change and I understand that, however we have had a couple committee chairmen and a director take on a role and just as the activities got started we have not heard from them since. We need some commitment to the position for the term. I also hope each person who takes a position recruits someone who can fill in if something should happen. Our terms are short so we need to be continually grooming our successors.

December Meeting Notes:

If you wern't there, you missed a fantastic meeting. Vince Tobia presented a slide show and narration of what it takes to catch Steelhead. He also brought along a few of his fishing guides who demonstrated how to set up your rod and leader to the tippett and the hook. How many times have you asked the question what knot is the strongest or how to tie two lines together. They taught which way to raise your rod when you feel a strike so that you hook and keep more fish on. It was the best meeting so far. The Pizza, Wings and Pasta Salad were almost gone before the end of the meeting. Don't miss out. Make sure you set aside January 6, 2009 for the next meeting.

The Case of the Lying Trout

The Case of the Lying Trout
A few (many?) years ago as president of the TU chapter, I invited Dr. Robert Bachman to speak at our banquet and present his video of the trout in Penn Creek which runs thru the campus of Penn State Univ. His work proved conclusively by using body size and spot identification that the same trout occupy the same feeds spots and lanes over an entire season and in some cases even over two years. The trout could be seen gently tipping up to take floating insects within their domain, ostensibly to use as little energy as possible. Of course this led to the common practice of placing one's fly a few feet above the rise of a trout and letting it drift into his window where he would inhale the fly. For many years this was assumed to be the way to fish a dry fly. Recently a new feeding procedure has been revealed by the trout in Eastkoy Creek under the bridge at school road. These trout merely sip whatever it is that they consume, no rises, only sips. It is almost impossible to catch these trout but small black beetles, ants and caddis flies have provided some measure of success. One large trout has been seen sipping, leaping, and gulping on various occasions. Recently, Sept 28th, he revealed that the take of the fly or insect was not the location of his lair. In one great rush he charged the fly, leaving a visible wake, only to refuse the fly and return some 20 or 30 feet to his lair between two large rocks. This event revealed his true location and after several hours of casting he sipped up the size 18 black beetle and was landed despite his frantic rush into the pool above the bride, and the 6X tippet. Amazingly he was a clipped fish and had been caught before by either Keech or I, clipped and released. So ended the career of a sixteen inch brown trout, since he most likely has migrated to safer haunts.

What is the club for?

Jay Lechner

Is the club what you thought it would be? Is it addressing the reason you joined? We have had a number of ventures, Project Healing Waters, Boy Scout, Float Stocking, Tree Planting … not all could be recorded as Significant Accomplishments. Some came close to being a disaster. My observations lead me to the conclusion that what separates success from failure is the chapters collective involvement.

First and foremost we are a FEDERATION OF FLY FISHERS and the common thread that joins us is fly fishing. Personally, I feel with the title of Fly Fisher comes responsibility. Responsibility is to the fish, the environment, the image, and our fellow Fly Fishers.

The Fish is the reason for it all and we should give them treatment that reflects the joy they impart to us. It is funny, but some of the most memorable fish I have encountered I have not caught. I don’t necessarily mean the one that got away, but the one that I did everything I could think of and he still thumbed his nose at me. Now the fish I do catch, I make every effort to return to the water with the least trauma possible, they are to precious to catch only once. We have a responsibility to the fish and the future to insure the fish is there for the future.

The key to the future is the consideration of the environment, protect the waters. Pick up the trash, not just yours. The beer can you pick up in the public fishing area may just keep it a public fishing area. That public fishing right can be shut down by the land owner because of excessive littering. Lets keep the waters clear. Lets cut and plant willows to keep the banks in place. We have a responsibility to the waters and the future to insure the water is there for the future.

The Image; PETA in there effort to stop sport fishing said that they would focus there attention on fly fishers, because “they are the most reasonable and caring of the people who fish”. Now PETA is a bunch of wacko in my opinion, but for them to make that observation of us says a lot for us. So if you help that misguided soul who is standing on the bank without waders get his lure out of an overhang, it might open a door that will allow you change this fellows direction and save them from the DARK SIDE. What about the novice who just bought the starters set from Gander Mountain? There he is on the stream, giving it his best, and you can see the frustration building. Take the time to get him started, he may wind up being the chapter president. We have a responsibility to the Federation and the future to insure the Federation is there for the future.
